You won’t meet another girl like, Midge!
Intake Date: 12/2021

Midge came from another rescue where she was found as a stray. They knew she needed immediate medical attention with the size and number of masses she had but were unable to give her the care she needed. From the day she came to Mackenzie’s, she has been full of spunk and is quite the character. If these masses were tended to when first discovered, her story would have a very different outcome.
Midge, an 8-year-old small Terrier mix, arrived at Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary with multiple mammary masses which needed to be removed. Seven small mammary masses were removed and determined to be benign/non-cancerous. Unfortunately, an additional very large mass was removed and determined to be cancerous. At the time the masses were removed, her cancer had already started to metastasis (spread) to surrounding lymph nodes. (The blue sutures are there to support the internal sutures from opening due to the activity dogs have after surgeries as extensive as this one).
Midge is a joyful pup who has no symptoms of cancer. We are pursuing chemotherapy with the goal of slowing down the spread of cancer while avoiding any unwanted side effects. Unfortunately, canine mammary masses are not particularly responsive to chemotherapy, so her cancer cannot be cured. But we are hopeful she will enjoy another 6-12 months of great quality of life while chemotherapy slows her rate of metastasis.
Once we ensure Midge is doing well with chemotherapy, we hope she will find a loving foster (or adoptive) family to enjoy her remaining time in a comfy forever home. She deserves it!
On 4/27/2022 our wishes came true! Midge has been living the good life with a forever foster family!
