At Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary, we rescue abused, abandoned, and neglected dogs from shelters and rescues across Michigan, giving them the second chance they deserve. But our mission goes beyond rescue. We are dedicated to finding the right forever homes for our dogs, promoting spay/neuter efforts to help prevent unwanted litters, and educating our community to improve the lives of animals.

Every dog who comes through our gates receives individualized care based on their unique needs. From general and specialized veterinary treatment to personalized training and behavioral support, we work to help each dog feel safe, build confidence, and prepare for a brighter future.

Above all, we believe every dog deserves love, compassion, and dignity. Whether a dog stays with us for weeks, months, or years, they will always have A Home Along the Way.

Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to placing homeless dogs into loving, lifelong homes. As Michigan’s largest no-kill facility, we provide a safe haven for dogs in need, no matter how long their journey with us may be.

We receive no state, local, or federal funding and rely entirely on the generosity of people like you and the support of our community. Every donation helps provide the food, medical care, training, enrichment, and daily necessities our dogs depend on.

Sponsor a Dog

Make a difference in a dog’s life, one month at a time.

For just $25 per month or a one-time gift of $300, you can sponsor a dog and help provide the monthly care they need while waiting for their forever home.

As a sponsor, you’ll receive:

A photo and biography of your sponsored dog
A personalized sponsorship certificate

Foster a Dog

Open your home. Change a life.

Fostering gives a dog a temporary place to feel safe, decompress, recover, and grow while waiting for adoption. Sometimes, a loving foster home is exactly what a dog needs to help them take the next step toward a brighter future.

Mackenzie’s offers several foster opportunities, including Foster-to-Adopt, Long-Term, Medical, and Hospice care.

General foster requirements include:

Being at least 21 years old
Having a physically fenced yard
Keeping current pets up to date on vaccinations
Attending at least two scheduled visits

A short application and meet-and-greet process helps us find the right fit for both the dog and the foster family.

You may not be able to foster every dog, but for the dog you welcome into your home, you can make all the difference.

Your best friend might be waiting for you.

There is nothing quite like the bond between a dog and their person. At Mackenzie’s, we take the time to get to know each dog so we can thoughtfully match them with a family whose lifestyle, experience, and home environment meet their individual needs.

Our adoption process is intentional because we want every match to have the best possible chance of becoming a successful, lifelong relationship.

Our adoption requirements include:

Visits by appointment
A fenced-in yard
At least two visits before finalizing an adoption
Dog-to-dog introductions for households with existing dogs

Volunteer With Us

Give your time. Share your heart. Make a difference.

Our volunteers are an essential part of life at Mackenzie’s. From helping dogs build confidence to providing enrichment and preparing them for adoption, volunteers make a meaningful difference in the lives of the dogs in our care.

There are many ways to get involved, including:

Dog walking, training, grooming, and enrichment
Community outreach and education
Fundraisers and meet-and-greets
Donation box distribution and collection

Our volunteer program begins with a convenient online orientation module, followed by hands-on training at the Sanctuary.
