Gumbo’s Story
Gumbo is a goofy, attention-loving guy who has never met a pair of sad puppy eyes he couldn’t put to good use! Between his playful antics, enthusiastic greetings, and perfectly timed vocal whines when he feels he’s being overlooked, Gumbo has a way of making sure everyone knows he’s around. He’s got a whole lot of personality packed into one very lovable package!
Gumbo arrived at Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary in May 2026 after being surrendered to another shelter by his previous owner, who felt they no longer had enough time for him. After transferring into our care, his veterinary evaluation revealed a much bigger challenge than anyone anticipated: both of his cranial cruciate ligaments were torn.
For a young, playful dog like Gumbo, these injuries mean putting a lot of his favorite activities on hold. His treatment plan involves surgically repairing one knee at a time, followed by rehabilitation and a lengthy recovery process. That’s a lot of healing ahead for a boy who would much rather be playing, exploring, and soaking up everyone’s attention!
The good news? Gumbo has already had the major medical investment needed to get him on the road to recovery, and we’re committed to seeing him through every step. Between his surgeries, follow-up care, rehabilitation, and everyday needs, his journey requires considerable resources and support.
That’s where his sponsors come in! Sponsoring Gumbo helps provide the medical care and continued support he needs while he works toward getting back to doing what he does best: being a happy, playful, attention-seeking goofball. Every contribution helps us give Gumbo the opportunity to heal, grow stronger, and enjoy all the adventures waiting for him.
Thank you for being part of Gumbo’s journey!
