Macho Man

Macho Man is the undisputed champion of cuddles and snuggles. He loves to be around people He is a super chill, “go with the flow” kind of guy that just wants to be with you.

He has a skin condition called actinic (solar) dermatitis which means his skin gets red and itchy when exposed to a lot of sunlight. He has a nifty sun suit that he must wear when outside in the daylight and it makes him look like a goofy beekeeper dog. He doesn’t mind wearing it at all, he’s just happy to strut his stuff! He also had some knee repair surgery after arriving at MAS, so you will have to be conscious of how intense his physical activity is until he fully heals. He is looking for a home that will stay committed to keeping tabs on his skin care and his temporary activity restrictions.

Macho Man is a great big sweetheart that would be a great addition to any home, as long as there’s no cats in that home. If interested in the “cream of the crop”, the one and only, Macho Man, fill out an application today! Can’t adopt, please me my sponsor.

Medical Update Feb. 2022
Macho Man’s repeat cultures came back consistent with MRSP that continues to be resistant to almost all oral antibiotics.

Unfortunately, the fluid filled swelling at the base of his left ear is a deep pocket of infection with MRSP. Another fluid filled pocket of infection was found on his right hip. He also has an active drainage tract on his right ankle that cultured positive for MRSP.
We had to special order chloramphenicol (an antibiotic) for Macho Man from Chewy.com. This medication is on backorder everywhere else and is not available through human pharmacies.

Side effects:
Dogs can experience GI side effects with chloramphenicol – anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea.
Rarely, dogs can develop rear limb weakness when on this medication.
This medication can cause reversible bone marrow issues and liver upset in dogs. Therefore, we will closely monitor bloodwork while Macho is on chloramphenicol.

Medical Update Feb. 28, 2022
Unfortunately, Macho Man has been taken to the Emergency Room this afternoon. Over the weekend he began to have a severe GI reaction to his antibiotic, Chloramphenicol, and started developing a gastric ulcer. The medication was stopped immediately but upon further testing today he has developed a severe anemia and his protein counts are dangerously low. He needs supportive care and will need a blood transfusion.
Please keep Macho Man in your thoughts and we will keep you updated on the situation.
