Importance of Spaying and Neutering Your Pets
Pet overpopulation is a primary reason shelters, humane societies, and sanctuaries are needed to house pets. That being said, spaying and neutering plays a giant role in decreasing the number of unwanted or sheltered pets in society. In addition, spaying and neutering offer many individual health benefits to pets. Pets that are spayed or neutered are at a lower risk of certain types of cancers (including breast and testicular cancer) and have less urges to roam the neighborhood or inappropriately urine mark. At Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary, all of our dogs are spayed and neutered once they are of an age and body weight in which anesthesia is safe. We pride ourselves in ensuring all of our dogs are spayed or neutered prior to finding their forever homes to ensure we are doing our part to positively impact the pet population!
Fun fact: We recently started “tattooing” a small green line onto the abdomens of our dogs at the time of their spay or neuter surgeries. Tattoos are a universal symbol that a pet is spayed or neutered.
