I would like to teach my dog to do a down. How would I train him to do that?
“Down” is sometimes difficult to achieve because it is a vulnerable position for your dog. Your dog may be a bit reluctant to go down at first. Be patient.
To teach your dog to lie down:
1. Start with your dog in sit. He is already half there.
2. Hold a treat between your thumb and index finger with your palm down.
3. Let your dog try to nibble the treat but keep it somewhat concealed between your fingers.
4. Never allowing your dog’s mouth to stray from the treat, slowly lower your hand to the ground between dog’s front paws while saying “down”. When his nose and the treat are on the ground, draw the treat away from him. You will be making an L-shaped movement. Your hand moves down and slightly away from your dog.
5. As soon as your dog’s body hits the ground, say "yes” and give him the treat.
