Heartwoms are worms that lives in the Heart, lungs and blood stream of cats, dogs, and some other wild animals. The larva of the worms are transmitted from pet to pet via mosquitoes. The adult worms range in size from 2-10 inches in length. While death is not immediate Heartworms reproduce and over time slowly begin to clog large blood vessels leading to the heart, block blood flow to areas of the lungs, cause inflammation of blood vessels and block smaller blood vessels in other organs. As the Heartworms block the flow of blood to parts of the animals lungs, this decreases the amount of oxygen crossing over into the bloodstream. The heart has to work harder and harder to supply the body with oxygen, evenually the extra work load on the heart leads to congestive heart failure.
