A dog is jumping at the gate and we go into the run to spend time with him. We put his lead on him and exit the run and he begins biting at the lead. We walk to his outside run to let him into a play yard and he jumps and begins biting at your fingers.
In all these instances if we spend time with him or let him into a play yard he sees this as a reward. Therefore we are supporting his bad behavior. To support the desired behavior you would need to ignore the dog and leave until he acted appropriately.
In modeling a behavior it is critical to reward at the precise instance the desired behavior occurs or you are modeling/supporting the incorrect behavior.
