OUR VISION

On Jan 15th 2021, we received an urgent phone call asking for help from Autumn, a wonderful animal control officer, in Montcalm County. We work with her often, and she knew we would be able to help if we could. She received a call that Friday, saying there was a dog wandering around with a mangled leg since Monday. We still can’t wrap our heads around why someone waited so long to call Animal Control. After Autumn was able to rescue him, she informed us that he was very sweet, but his leg was beyond saving. Please note that by clicking ‘read more’ you will see graphic pictures of Vision and his leg injury.

A section was missing, and he was also very emaciated. Autumn assumes that his leg was likely caught in a trap. He needed medical attention right away and the clinic she took him to was unable to help.

We knew we had to help, and we told her to bring him over as soon as possible.

We prepared ourselves for what we may see as we began to get our medical supplies ready for his arrival. However, preparing yourself never really works when you’re hoping it’s not as bad as it sounds. When we finally met this adorable guy and saw the condition he was in, it was more disturbing than we could have ever imagined.

Our team jumped into action! As our LVT prepared our equipment, we began to offer him small amounts of food and water at a time. It was accepted with enthusiasm, and we received plenty of kisses and snuggles afterwards.

We started IV fluids, antibiotics, and pain medication. Given the amount of suffering this dog must have been in, his behavior was remarkable. He allowed us to look at his leg, hand feed him, look at the sores around his mouth, give him affection, and place the IV in without incident. Our connection with him deepened with every passing minute. We began to discuss our fears and hopes of what was going to happen within the next few days and weeks to come. We all had the same vision…he was going to make it, he was going to heal, and he was going to find a loving forever home!

It was only fitting that we named him, Vision.

To get him the help he needed, we called our main emergency clinic, but they were unable to help us at that time. We then called Family Friends Veterinary Hospital, and they stepped right up, giving us amazing assistance and guidance on the next steps to take. We took him to Family Friends that very next morning, and they were able to operate on him that day, removing the injured leg up to the hip.
