Heal Cinnamen’s Heart

Cinnamen, and her daughter, Little Bug, came to Mackenzie’s on 3/3/2021. Both dogs had lived their entire lives on a chain outside and were in poor condition when they arrived at Mackenzie’s. Cinnamen tested positive for heartworm. Little Bug suffered from glomerulonephritis, which is defined by the VCA as “a specific type of renal (or kidney) disease characterized by inflammation of the glomeruli. Glomeruli are tiny structures in the kidneys that act as filters for the blood.” We tried so hard to help her. Despite our best efforts and a trip to the emergency room, we weren’t able to save Little Bug, and she sadly passed away a week and a half after she arrived at Mackenzie’s.

Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquito bites where heartworm larva enters the bloodstream of a dog. Over many months, the heartworm larva develops into adult heartworms. These heartworms live in the heart and pulmonary artery of the dog, which can result in long-term, irreversible damage to the heart and lungs if not treated.

This disease is preventable with a once-a-month pill. The cost for treatment is much more expensive than the heartworm preventative medication. No dog should ever have to endure this. Please talk to your vet today about heartworm prevention if you haven’t already.

We are determined to heal Cinnamen’s heart. Heartworm treatment is a long process, lasting around four months. Cinnamen will have many restrictions during her treatment. Please send her lots of healing thoughts as she goes through this painful process.

You can help us “Heal Cinnamen’s Heart” by making a donation to her treatment today! Thank you for supporting this adorable girl.

Once she finishes her treatments and receives a full bill of health, she will be ready to find her forever family!
