Depending on the individual dog, sometimes an invisible fence might not be the best fit for the dog’s needs. And sometimes this type of fence can cause more damage to a rescue dog than most people might think. With all that these rescue dogs have been through, we try to have extra safety precautions in place for each dog at their new home with access to physical fenced play-areas.
Reason One: There is always the risk that the dog could still run through the invisible fence, and might not come back through because they don’t want to get "shocked" again.
Reason Two: Other animals and/or people can still enter the yard with invisible fence, possibly causing harm to your dog.
Reason Three: If the power is disconnected, the dog then has free roam.
Reason Four: A shock collar is not usually a positive reinforcement based training technique. Some rescue dogs do not respond well to this non-positive experience of entering a new home where he is now "shocked" for normal dog behaviors.
When considering invisible fencing, always take into account the risks and benefits compared with your individual dog’s personality and behavior needs. It is helpful to research a professional installation company with an experienced trainer to help your individual dog’s needs at his unique learning pace.
