Meet Thor
Thor was evaluated by both an oncologist and a surgical specialist at BluePearl on January 15th after an adrenal mass was identified. While the mass could not be definitively diagnosed at that time, imaging confirmed its presence. After consultation, BluePearl determined that Thor was a good surgical candidate based on the mass’s location and the fact that it had not significantly grown or begun obstructing major veins.
On Monday, February 2nd Thor underwent surgery to remove the mass. We’re incredibly grateful that he came through surgery successfully and has been recovering beautifully in his foster home.
On February 17th, we received the biopsy results. Unfortunately, the mass located adjacent to Thor’s adrenal gland was confirmed to be hemangiosarcoma. Hemangiosarcoma is a malignant, highly aggressive cancer that arises from blood vessels. While it is most commonly found in the spleen and liver, it can develop anywhere in the body where blood vessels are present.
This type of cancer carries a poor prognosis. It poses a risk of sudden internal bleeding and is known for rapid metastasis (spread) to other organs, including the lungs, kidneys, muscles, spinal cord, and brain. When metastasis occurs, it can cause organ-specific symptoms depending on the area affected.
Surgery is the first step in treatment for hemangiosarcoma, but because this cancer spreads microscopically very early on, chemotherapy is always recommended as the next step. The goal of chemotherapy is not cure, but to slow the progression of visible metastasis and extend quality time. Without chemotherapy, Thor’s prognosis would likely be 3–6 months. With injectable chemotherapy, we may be able to extend that to approximately 6–12 months. Our local oncologist has advised that survival beyond 12 months is unfortunately unlikely.
After thoughtful discussion, we have elected to proceed with injectable chemotherapy to give Thor as much time as possible. Most importantly, our focus is on GOOD quality time. Ensuring that whatever time he has is comfortable, happy, and filled with love.
Thor continues to be bright, comfortable, and surrounded by love in his foster home. We are committed to monitoring him closely and advocating for him every step of the way.
Thank you all for loving Thor and for being part of his journey.
