Release Marker
Importance
• Gives the dog permission to have free time.
• Lets the dog know that he can stop doing a command, such as “sit.”
• Allows training to be less interrupted and to flow more smoothly.
• Creates stability for the dog when everyone that works with him is using the same command.
How to Train:
“Ok” is the Release Marker.
• Take a handful of bite sized treats, put a leash on the dog, and hold the leash in your other hand.
• Give the dog the command you want him to do, such as “sit.”
• As soon as he’s doing the command, say the Reward Marker, “yes” while giving him a treat.
• Now take a step back, giving a small tug on the leash to get the dog to move forward, while saying “o.k.”
• If the dog gets up from a command, such as “sit” before you give the Release Marker, give the Non-Reward Marker, “nope” and repeat until you are able to give the Release Marker.
