Meet Gilbert, a big floppy teddy bear with the brain of a marshmallow and the enthusiasm of an overgrown puppy. If there were a prize for the goofiest, most lovable “himbo” at the sanctuary, Gilbert would be taking home the gold! He has the heart of a snuggler, the soul of a clown, and the coordination of someone who just realized their limbs exist.

Gilbert’s main priorities in life are belly rubs, snack breaks, and most importantly, his daily quota of human cuddles. While he is a certified expert in the art of relaxation, he sometimes has a hard time keeping his emotions in check. Most of the time, he is as cool as a cucumber, but when excitement hits, it is like a switch flips, and suddenly he’s all wags, hops, and playful nibbles, trying his best to turn excitement into fun.

As delightful as that sounds (and trust us, it is), Gilbert’s big heart sometimes struggles to handle the big world. He deals with anxiety, particularly during storms and run-ins with his archenemy, the lawn mower. Unfortunately, his struggles have led to moments of panic and self-injury in the past. To help him stay calm and safe, he is on medications and working on training to learn better ways to manage his feelings.

On top of his emotional rollercoaster, Gilbert also battles allergies that cause itchy skin and an upset tummy. His sensitive stomach is well controlled with a prescription diet, and thanks to dedicated training and treatment, he is learning to regulate his emotions much better. But the truth is, he may always need extra support, patience, and of course, an endless supply of belly rubs.
