    Skunk Season Back Again

It’s that time of year again….the skunks are out. If your dog has never been skunked, consider yourself lucky. If your dog does have a close encounter of the worst kind, try this simple recipe to get the stink out.

1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
    1/4cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid castile soap (available at health food stores)

Mix all ingredients in a medium-size bucket because it will fizz. Soak your dog’s fur, being careful not to get the solution in his eyes, nose, ears, or mouth. These ingredients are natural, but they have acidic properties and can cause irritation. Knead the solution into the fur, covering every part of your dog. It’s important to soak well, especially for a long-haired dog.

Use a sponge to clean around his eyes and head. Rinse thoroughly and dry your dog.

This solution changes the chemical properties of the skunk spray to break it down, so the odor is eliminated, not masked.

If any solution is left in the container, get rid of it. Do not store it. The chemical reaction from being closed up could cause it to explode.
