Until We Meet Again
Over the weekend, we had to say a heartbreaking goodbye to our aloof, goofy, and deeply loved friend, Thor.
After months of bravely battling an aggressive cancer, Thor experienced a rapid decline in his health. His foster family, who loved him wholeheartedly and gave him the forever home he deserved, was faced with an incredibly difficult decision after witnessing two weeks of unpredictable changes. One moment, Thor would be his energetic self—zooming around the house, digging new holes in the yard, and keeping everyone on their toes. The next, he would be exhausted, unable to leave the couch.

On Thursday, Thor briefly began to stumble while walking, but quickly recovered and returned to the happy, spirited dog we all knew and loved.
Then, on Friday, July 31, everything changed.
That evening, Thor became extremely lethargic and could barely get off the couch. As his condition worsened, he could no longer take a few steps without collapsing. His foster family immediately contacted Mackenzie’s, and despite it being 9:00 p.m., our medical team sprang into action with the urgency and compassion Thor deserved. Our veterinarian traveled from Grand Rapids to the sanctuary and then to Thor’s foster home, ensuring he would no longer suffer. Above all else, everyone shared the same goal—to give Thor the peaceful goodbye he deserved, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by the family who loved him.
Thor spent six unforgettable months with his foster family. He leaves behind a home forever changed by his presence. There are a few extra holes in the garden, throw pillows missing their zippers, and more than a few blankets that never stood a chance—but every bit of it was worth it. He filled their home with laughter, love, and unforgettable memories. Most importantly, Thor was happy.

From the moment Thor arrived at Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary in Jan 2021, he captured the hearts of everyone he met. Thanks to the unwavering support of our incredible community, he received the specialized medical care, surgery, and endless love he deserved. While we all hoped for more time, we find comfort in knowing his final chapter was one filled with compassion, dignity, and the unconditional love of a family who cherished him.
To Thor’s foster family: thank you. Thank you for opening your hearts and home to a dog who needed you most. Thank you for giving him the life every dog deserves—a life filled with comfort, adventure, security, and love. Our hearts are with you as you grieve this tremendous loss.
Run free, sweet Thor.
You will forever be a part of the Mackenzies’ family, and your legacy will live on in every life you touched. You will never be forgotten.
