At Mackenzie’s, we rescue abused, abandoned, and neglected dogs from shelters and rescues across Michigan, giving them the second chance they deserve. Our work goes beyond rescue—we focus on thoughtfully matching each dog with the right forever family, promoting spay/neuter efforts to reduce unwanted litters, and educating the public to strengthen animal welfare in our community. We are committed to providing the highest level of care, including general and specialized veterinary treatment, individualized training, and behavioral support.

Above all, we believe every dog deserves love, compassion, and dignity. Whether a dog stays with us for weeks, months, or years, they will always have “A home along the way.”

Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to placing homeless dogs into lifelong, loving homes. Mackenzie’s receives no state, local, or federal funding and relies solely on private donations and community support.

Sponsor a Dog

For $25/month or a one-time $300 gift, you can sponsor a dog and help provide their monthly care.
Sponsors receive:

• A photo and biography of their sponsored dog
• A personalized sponsorship certificate

Planned Giving

Leave a lasting legacy for dogs in need—planned gifts may also offer tax benefits. Options include:

Wish List

Support our daily care and enrichment programs by donating items our dogs use every day—treats, toys, medical supplies, cleaning essentials, and more.
Many items can be purchased directly through our Amazon Wish List and shipped to the Sanctuary.

Foster a Dog

Fostering provides dogs with a loving place to grow, recover, or decompress while they wait for adoption.
MAS offers several foster programs, including Foster-to-Adopt, Long-Term, Medical, and Hospice care.

Requirements include:

• Age 21+
• A physically fenced yard
• Up-to-date vaccinations for current pets
• At least two scheduled visits

A short application and meet-and-greet process ensures the right match for both dog and foster home.

Adopt

Our adoption process is thoughtful and intentional—designed to match families with dogs whose personalities, social needs, and energy levels truly fit their lifestyle. Click here to view our adoptable dogs! 

Requirements include:

• Visits by appointment
• A fenced-in yard
• At least two visits before finalizing an adoption
• Dog-to-dog introductions for homes with existing pets

Volunteer

Volunteers play a vital role in socializing and supporting our dogs, helping them build confidence and prepare for adoption.

Opportunities include:

• Dog walking, training, grooming, and enrichment
• Community outreach and education
• Fundraisers and meet-and-greets
• Donation box distribution and collection

Our volunteer program starts with a convenient online orientation module, followed by hands-on training at the Sanctuary.
