Meet Kasper: A Senior Dog Who Deserves His Second Chance

At almost 13 years old, Kasper has already been through more than any senior dog should have to endure. A little Maltese mix with a complicated medical and behavioral history, Kasper came to Mackenzie’s after spending months being boarded at a veterinary clinic. The organization caring for him no longer had the resources or housing needed to provide him with the long-term care he requires. Because of his age, medical needs, and history of biting, Kasper had very few options—and without somewhere safe to go, he was at risk of losing his life simply because he was difficult to place.

We knew we had to give him a chance.

Kasper is the kind of dog who reminds us why our mission matters. He doesn’t need someone to look at his list of challenges and decide he isn’t worth the effort. He needs someone willing to see the little dog underneath all of it—a senior who deserves comfort, patience, dignity, and the opportunity to simply be safe.

Kasper’s Medical Needs

Kasper arrived with significant eye disease, cataracts, and a heart murmur, and our veterinary team is now working to better understand everything he needs.

His eyes are currently painful and, unfortunately, he is not visually functional in either eye, although he may be able to see shadows with his right eye in bright enough light. His tear production is adequate in his right eye but low in his left. He also has eyelashes along the upper eyelids of both eyes that constantly rub against the surface of his eyes, which is likely contributing significantly to his discomfort.

Our veterinary team is exploring specialized treatment for the abnormal hairs and will continue adjusting his medical management to get his eyes as comfortable as possible. If we cannot achieve adequate comfort through medical treatment, surgical removal of one or both eyes may ultimately be considered.

Kasper also has a very loud heart murmur, and he will be undergoing an echocardiogram and additional cardiac evaluation so our veterinary team can determine exactly what is happening with his heart and how best to safely treat him.

He also has instability in both of his rear hocks, causing his ankles to intermittently tip forward when he stands. This type of instability can be related to underlying problems elsewhere in the rear limbs, and because Kasper was reluctant to allow his hips to be extended, our veterinary team is concerned that he may have underlying hip issues as well. He will have a more thorough orthopedic evaluation and x-rays while he is sedated for his upcoming procedures.

Once his heart has been evaluated and our veterinary team determines it is safe, Kasper will also need a dental cleaning.

For now, Kasper is on a medical hold from adoption and fostering while we work through these concerns and get a better understanding of what he needs.

Kasper the Dog

And then there is Kasper himself.

Despite everything he has going on, Kasper can be a very sweet, friendly little guy who enjoys attention. But he also has very clear boundaries, particularly when it comes to handling around his face.

Kasper has a history of multiple serious bites that appear to be primarily related to handling around his face. His bites are the grab-and-shake type and can cause significant injury. Because of this, he must be carefully managed and muzzled when receiving his eye medications, and everyone interacting with him must be mindful of his boundaries.

We don’t know everything that has happened in Kasper’s past, and we don’t need to. What we do know is that he deserves the opportunity to feel safe and to have his needs understood rather than simply being judged by his history.

Our goal right now isn’t to rush Kasper into adoption. It’s to give him time.

Time to decompress.
Time to get comfortable.
Time to understand what hurts.
Time to learn what makes him feel safe.
Time to discover the personality underneath the fear and discomfort.
And, most importantly, time to simply be a dog.

Kasper’s care is going to take time, patience, specialized veterinary treatment, medications, diagnostics, possible surgery, dental care, and plenty of careful one-on-one attention.

But that is exactly why he came to Mackenzie’s.

We don’t believe a dog should lose his chance at life because he is old, medically complicated, or difficult to understand. Sometimes the dogs who need us the most are the ones who require us to slow down, listen a little harder, and give them more time than anyone else was willing or able to give.

Kasper may never become an easy dog. We don’t know what his future will look like yet.

But he is safe.

He has a warm place to sleep.
He has people advocating for him.
He has a veterinary team working to make him comfortable.
And he has time.

For a nearly 13-year-old dog who was once at risk of euthanasia simply because there was nowhere else for him to go, that is a pretty incredible second chance.
